How a Custom Stainless Steel Perforated Sheet Solved Corrosion, Clogging, and Costly Rework
One of our customers, a fabrication contractor supplying components for food-processing equipment and architectural interiors, came to us with a problem that had already cost them several projects. Their previous solution used painted mild-steel screens. The material looked acceptable at delivery, but moisture, cleaning chemicals, and daily handling quickly damaged the coating. Rust appeared around the holes, residue collected on rough edges, and every replacement created extra labor, delivery delays, and complaints from the end user.
The Customer’s Original Problem

The old panels could not withstand humid production areas or regular washdowns. Once the coating was scratched, corrosion spread from the punched edges and made the panels look unprofessional.

Choosing the right stainless steel grade
We reviewed the working environment before recommending material. For general indoor use, 304 stainless steel offered a strong balance of corrosion resistance, appearance, and cost. For areas exposed to salt, stronger chemicals, or aggressive cleaning, 316 stainless steel provided additional protection. Where budget control was critical and exposure was mild, 201 stainless steel was considered only after confirming the service conditions.
Optimizing the hole pattern and open area
Instead of copying the customer’s old drawing, our team recalculated hole diameter, pitch, margin, and open area. A staggered round-hole pattern improved airflow while maintaining strength. For visual screens, square and decorative patterns were evaluated to match the project design. For machinery protection, the layout was adjusted to prevent accidental contact without restricting ventilation.
Improving edge quality and flatness
The previous supplier left sharp burrs around many openings. We changed the punching sequence, controlled sheet tension, and added deburring and leveling steps. Where complex contours were required, CNC cutting and laser cutting were combined with punching to improve dimensional accuracy. The result was a cleaner surface, safer handling, and easier welding and bending.

Less maintenance
After switching to the new panels, the customer no longer needed to repaint damaged screens. Smooth surfaces and properly finished holes made routine cleaning faster, and the stainless finish stayed presentable after repeated washdowns.
Better production reliability
The redesigned perforation pattern reduced blockage and improved ventilation around the equipment. Operators reported more stable airflow, and the contractor avoided emergency replacement orders caused by premature corrosion.

The architectural panels arrived flatter, more consistent, and easier to install. That helped the contractor complete the project on schedule and present a higher-quality finished product to its client.
